LLE at London Art Fair Lindsey Bull Aly Helyer Ben Risk Toby Ursell Casper White

For ‘Dialogues’, LLE will be showcasing the work of five painters who use the classical themes of portraiture and figuration in new ways. The subjects of the paintings are a diverse troupe – some based on the self, others observed or imagined, but all ask you to question who they are and why they are here. Ben Risk’s work is an ongoing exploration into a series of ‘socio mythic’ characters which appear as a semi-fictional cast, becoming lost and distorted within the painted surface. Lindsey Bull’s paintings seem to wash the canvas with figures, often lonely, melancholy, shy and introverted, as if trying to avoid our gaze or to distance themselves from the world. Casper White conceals and reveals the sitter with light hues of watercolour on fabric. He plays with the traditional idea of a backdrop of a portrait, elevating this prop to a work of art in its own right. Toby Ursell’s work approaches the history of painting in a truly literal way, his work an imagining of himself in dialogue with characters from historical paintings. Aly Helyer's work interrogates representations of the self. Her oil and gouache paintings excavate the performance of character, the ruptures, tension and violence at stake in our image. While the history of the figure in painting is implicit within all the artists’ work, the subjects are resolutely of today and the modern desire for a singular depiction of identity and the self.

PRESS RELEASE

LLEgallery is focused on contemporary painting. For Manchester Contemporary LLEgallery are showcasing a range of painters who use the traditional theme of Landscape in new ways. The paintings are immersed and grounded by the history of Landscape painting but they attempt to move the subject forward and upwards, standing upon shoulders to get a new view. Their work has a respect and appreciation of the processes of painting, how a landscape is assembled via time, photographs, memory and experience, capturing what Paul Nash called genius loci, or 'the spirit of a place'.

Gareth Kemp’s paintings arise out of a process of carefully planning the collection of elements in each painting, mentally cutting and pasting between photographic sources, and drawing on memories of growing up in rural Wales. This method results in repetitions and occlusions, recurrences of motifs and, frequently, a blurring between foreground and background.

Similarly Tom Pitt’s paintings draw on memories of places he’s walked by hundreds of times or a photo that he may have put aside years ago. Tom paints places, objects, or things he categorises as somewhere between place and object. They are the starting point for a process of improvisation and meditation.

Lindsey Bull’s imagery is widely sourced, from fashion magazines to witchcraft journals. The figures in her paintings are often costumed, and although Lindsey’s work is figurative, the environment her figures reside in is equally important, adding to the air of other-worldliness in the paintings.

Catrin Llwyd Evans re-appropriates imagery to create new objects. The works are drawn from pre-existing imagery, including photographs, video stills and images from contemporary and historical events. Through the process of filtering the original concept, Catrin removes the narrative, furthering the image from the original context, allowing for new interpretations to emerge.

A sense of being many times removed from a place is also evident in the work of Lara Davies. Lara makes numerous studies of the same or similar image, where the photographic image is gradually disregarded and the paintings become about pattern and tone.

Pattern, architecture, geography, graphic design, graffiti are all assembled upon the canvases of Marielle Hehir, whilst anatomical forms are introduced to suggest human footprint in amongst an environment of rapid change. The paintings intend to concurrently evoke nostalgia for the past, cause us to consider the present state of things and provoke apprehension for the future.

Gordon Dalton’s recent paintings have a quiet melancholy that questions their intentions. An anxious contradiction is on show, with the work being self-conscious of what it is, its possible failings, yet it revels in a new found simplicity and relationships to landscape painting, finding an intimate beauty in both natural and post-industrial landscape.

Whether implicit or explicit, the seven artists in this exhibition all acknowledge the canon of landscape painting and add their own contribution to the field.

Whilst not intentional or themed, Arcade Studios’ inaugural year has focused on painting, drawing and printmaking, with each of the artists taking a contemporary view on traditional genres such as portraiture and landscape.

Although art is not separate from the world around it or from dialogue with other media or techniques, each of the artist’s studio practices recognises its power lies in its own history, tradition, conventions and genres and looks to expand upon them.

Arcade Studios in Fairwater, Cardiff was launched in early 2015 by Arcade Cardiff Director, Robert Kennedy, as a sister organisation to the gallery. Arcade Studios provides professional quality studio provision in Cardiff in a critical and supportive environment.

To celebrate the 1st anniversary of Arcade Studios, the 5 resident studio artists exhibit together for the first time. As well as referencing the studio dart board (an essential of any successful studio), Double Top looks at the differences and shared concerns of 5 artists in their first year at Arcade.
